This 27-30 May 2024, the Ministry of Energy, Ghana will host the annual Africa Nuclear Business Platform (AFNBP) conference and exhibition in Accra.
In a welcome video message released last week, Dr. Robert Sogbadji, the National Coordinator of the Ghana Nuclear Power Programme from the Ministry of Energy shared that Ghana will soon make a significant announcement regarding vendor identification for its 1st nuclear power project.
In addition, collaborative and implementing agreements with the vendor country expected to be signed in may during Africa NBP 2024 this May. Ghana aims to establish its 1st nuclear power plant by early 2030s.

Under the auspices of the African Young Generation Nuclear (AYGN) and together hosted the 3rd African Youth Nuclear Summit (AYNS2021) in Accra, Ghana on 25–29 October 2021, dubbed, “The impact of nuclear science and technology applications on economic recovery in Africa post COVID-19 pandemic”.
AYNS2021, was a hybrid event that brought together the brightest young leaders from across Africa. In attendance were a total of 74 participants joining in-person from 8 countries and over 300 participants joining virtually. Additionally, AYNS2021 had about 36 world renowned speakers putting a multinational lens on the application of nuclear science and technology to mitigate the economic hardship resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Summit included diverse components capturing multiple interests where its technical program included keynote addresses from key stakeholders in the nuclear industry both locally and internationally as well as key political figures including a representative of the Energy Minister and a Presidential staffer. Keynote speakers included the President of the International Youth Nuclear Congress (IYNC), H.E. Lena Andriolo; H.E. Messaoud Baaliouamer, Executive Secretary of African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AfCONE); Executive Director, Mr. David Cleave of the International Science and Technology Centre (ISTC); Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), African Division, Professor Abdulrazak Shaukat; Hon. Jake Obeng-Bediako, the Presidential Coordinator for Youth Engagement and Strategy from the Office of the President of Ghana; Director General of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, Professor Benjamin J. B. Nyarko; Dr. Emmanuel Ampomah-Amoako; Representing the Director General of Nuclear Regulatory Authority of Ghana (NRA); and Dr. Robert Sogbaji, Representing the Energy Minister.
There were panel and plenary sessions included to highlight the non-negligible effects nuclear science, technology and its applications would have on economic recovery post Covid-19. Talks were given by renowned experts and established individuals in the nuclear science and technology industry globally. AYNS2021 also had workshop components which involved short trainings from global leading experts in the nuclear fraternity. All delegates, both online and in-person took advantage of this opportunity to hone their skills, accept knowledge from the previous generation as well as network with each other and domain experts as this was one of the key purposes of the Summit.
The Ghana Young Generation in Nuclear (GhYGN) embarked on a webinar series to introduce the public to the peaceful benefits of nuclear science and technology through simple non technical jargon discussions dubbed: ‘Nuclear: Friend or Foe?’, which took place every fortnight from 3rd June to 29th July, 2021.
Each session hosted at least 4 invited speakers who are young experts from the nuclear industry, and the virtual sessions saw an average of 60 or more participants. Sessions in order of execution were under the following topics:
a. The ABC of Nuclear Technology
b. Nuclear Safety, Security and Safeguard
c. Nuclear Applications in Healthcare Delivery
d. Nuclear Technology in ensuring food security
e. Nuclear Energy
